Galatians 1:13-24, Ps. 139:1-3,13-15 Luke 10:38-42
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion.” (Luke 10:41-42)
Why did Martha complain about Mary’s absence from the kitchen when Jesus was in their house? The simple answer comes from Jesus’ words: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good portion which shall not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42).
Martha, just like many of us was anxious and troubled even when Jesus Christ was right there in her home. “Why are you afraid and worried about what I will eat? Have you forgotten I am the one who fed the five thousand? Don’t you think I do not have the power to make that food ready without your efforts?”
Martha was anxious and troubled she was distracted by all the serving. Again, like Martha, we could easily get distracted in the course of our “busy-ness” with sacred duties. In her “busy-ness”, Martha didn’t realize she had started treating Jesus like one ordinary human being. Her fears got the better part of her.
Mary, on the other hand, chose the good portion. What is the good portion? Faith in God’s providence. The good portion is having a firm trust in God’s power to make up for our inadequacies. The good portion is refusing to panic knowing that Jesus can do all things.
Our first reading today reveals another classic example of why we Christians cannot afford to be worried or scared. Paul, writing to the Galatians is confessing how he was determined to destroy the Church of God completely even at its infant stage only for God to arrest him on his way to Damascus.
Child of God, worry no more, the God you serve is capable and responsible. He knows exactly how to provide what is needed when it is needed regardless of your panicking and worrying. He knows how to protect that which He Loves.
Only one thing is needed: Faith. Mary has chosen the good portion; to sit at Jesus’ feet in prayer and adoration, to listen carefully to Jesus’ words by meditating on the Bible, to trust deeply that in the midst of the chaos, we can afford to sit still with Jesus.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, free me from holding on to my fears. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Be Happy. Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you. (Saint Francis of Assisi. Bible Study: Galatians 1:13-24, Ps. 139:1-3,13-15 Luke 10:38-42)
