Readings: Apocalypse 18:1-2,21-23,19:1-3,9, Ps. 100:2-5, Luke 21:20-28

“People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. When these things begin, stand up and raise your heads because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:26,28)

Our first reading and Gospel passage today begin in a sad and tense mood. They both speak of destruction, punishment, and calamity, but surprisingly, both end in joyful and hopeful tones.

- John concludes by saying, “Blessed are those invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” Jesus says, “Now, when these things begin to take place, look up and raise your heads because your redemption is drawing near.”

- There would be great distress upon the earth. Many would fall by the sword, and great signs would appear in heaven and earth. Surely, we all shall face judgment one day. Babylon (which signifies the great evils in this world) would be thrown down and avenged.

- Nevertheless, the message for us today is that in all these terrifying events that shall mark the end of time, we do not need to be afraid or have panic attacks. As our people would say, “A clear conscience fears no accusation.” Those who continue living in Christ's light will be rewarded no matter what happens.

- Let us not be overcome by the pervasive evil around us. If you cannot beat them, don’t join them. Keep your heads high in virtue and never succumb to sin because your redemption is close. Right now, it may seem like evil people are succeeding, and nothing is left for the virtuous. Keep your head high. Never condescend or compromise your values.

- Some time ago, a young man asked me if it is possible to become rich in this country without engaging in some sinful act in one way or another. He was convinced that the hardship of the economy today leaves no room for the success of the righteous. Today’s readings answer his question. Judgment day is real. Those who seem to be succeeding today through evil means will surely face God’s vengeance.

- Look up and raise your head. Look beyond this world. Look beyond the satisfaction you will gain by making money through dubious means. Look up; raise your head above the suffering you see around you. In a few years from now, we would all be dead and buried. No one will ask who drove the best car, ate the best food, or wore the best clothes. The only thing that would matter then is where we are spending eternity.

- The devil showed Jesus all the world's kingdoms, but Jesus looked up. Jesus raised his head above what His eyes could see. Jesus looked at the glory of heaven, and He said to the devil, “I will not bow to you.” Do not bow to the devil. Do not sell your conscience. Look up and raise your head.

Let us pray: Almighty, ever-living God, may we never give up on the race to eternal life, regardless of the persecution that we face. We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Be Happy. Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. May God’s abundant blessings be upon us all. (Thursday of week 34 in Ordinary Time Liturgical Colour: Green. Bible Study: Apocalypse 18:1-2,21-23,19:1-3,9, Ps. 100:2-5, Luke 21:20-28).
