Read Genesis 49:29-33,50:15-26, Ps. 105:1-4,6-7, Matthew 10:24-33
“Fear not, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive as they are today. So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” (Genesis 50:19-21)
After their father’s death, the brothers of Joseph were not convinced that Joseph had truly forgiven them. They feared Joseph was only waiting for their father to die before striking back. So, they went to prostrate themselves before Joseph to ask for pardon. This was the second time they would bring Joseph’s dream to reality.
Joseph did not forget what his brothers did to him, but he was no longer pained. He saw the bigger picture and expressed gratitude for all that happened. For Joseph, his brothers’ crime was a blessing in disguise – it was God’s way of sending him ahead of them to save their lives.
Joseph not only forgave his brothers, but he also went the extra mile to protect them and provide for their needs. It is not enough to say: “I have forgiven you.” Like Joseph, we must restore the broken relationship. Too often, we say things like: “I have forgiven you, but don’t you ever come near me again.” Such forgiveness is only cosmetic.
While sending his disciples to preach, Jesus told them they were like sheep amid wolves. This meant that they were going to face all kinds of persecution. In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus tells them not to be afraid: “Have no fear of them; for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.” (Matthew 10:26). We are not to be scared because whatever secrets plan our enemies have against us will indeed be exposed.
Jesus said: “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28). We must never allow our fear of human beings to cause us to offend God. People can only kill our bodies, but God can do much more.
Again, Jesus assures us: “Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 10:31-32). God always protects those who acknowledge Him, stand by the truth, and act righteously, even at the risk of their lives.
Let us pray: Almighty ever-living God, may my every thought, word, and deed be a profession of my faith and devotion to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
Be Happy. Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you. (Saint Bonaventure, Bishop, Doctor. Bible Study: Genesis 49:29-33,50:15-26, Ps. 105:1-4,6-7, Matthew 10:24-33).
